Afenifere Team on Assessment Tour of AD States
By Funso Muraina in Akure

Efforts at assessing the performance of the six Alliance for Democracy (AD) governors by the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere continued yesterday with a visit of a team set up by the group to Ondo State.

The leader of the team, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi said that the assessment was in response to recent criticisms of the governors for non-performance.

Prominent among the critics is former governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande who berated the AD governors for not living up to the expectations of the people in programme implementation.

Akinyemi said that the exercise was in line with the tradition of Afenifere which would not react without facts.

When completed, he said, the exercise would put the group in a better position to comment on the performance of the AD governors.

By setting up the verification team, he said the Afenifere has always played a leading role in the politics of Nigeria and had established itself as a pacesetter for others.

The former External Affairs Minister said that the team would inspect projects which were executed within the past two years, saying that his team had actually covered 10 local governments in Ondo State.

According to him, the team had free and unfettered freedom to pick projects from the list given to them by the state government.

Responding, Governor Adebayo Adefarati described the verification exercise as a welcome development, stressing that his administration had nothing to hide.

He said that he had been implementing the four cardinal programmes of his party and urged the visitors to pay particular attention to projects executed with the 13 per cent derivation fund.
