AIDS: Saloon Operators Counselled on Need to Steralise Equipment

Identified as major aids contact point, saloon operators has been advised to always steralise their equipment before use.

Giving the advise while addressing a rally to mark the HIV/AIDS day celebration at the Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State, Mrs. Remi Akinmade, Chairperson of HIV/AIDS Prevention And Impact Mitigation Coalition (HAPIC), said it is not only already established that HIV/AIDS can be contacted through the use of unsterilised saloon equipment used for infected persons, the dreaded disease is increasingly being contacted in saloons..

She enjoined those patronising saloons to always insist that saloon operators sterilie their equipment with bleaching solution and not water or kerosine. While recorgnising the fact that the most common source of contacting the disease was through sexual inter-course, she cautioned thatpeople abstain from having indiscriminate sex and keep to one trusted partner.

Mrs. Akinmade warned those who must have sex with strangers to endeavour to always use condom even though it was not hundred percent safe.

Mrs. Aino Anthony Action Manager of HAPIC, on her part, said that AIDS can also be contacted through blood transfusion in hospitals. She advised patients in need of blood to always screen blood before transfusion.

The HIV/AIDS campaigh rally took off from the Mainland Local Government secretariat in Yaba and went through most streets in the council area.
