  Ciroma and Azie's Audit Report

((( BACK

The Finance Minister Mallam Adamu Ciroma has succeeded in exposing his ignorance over audit function viz-a-viz financial regulations. His claim that Mr. Azie is incompetent as reported in Thursday, February 25, 2003 issue of your newspaper is rather unfortunate.

He should have lauded the courage Mr. Azie had in calling a spade its real name, rather than the babble rousing he has joined Professor Jerry Gana in making.

The truth remains that as a former military apologist, Ciroma has never seen any audit report made public hence his being jittery over this very one.

As a professional accountant, I know that the steps Mr. Azie took before making the report public, are in tandem with audit standards. The officials indicted must have taken the initial points raised when the audit draft was being discussed over some grey areas as something unserious only to turn round now and say that Mr. Azie was in rush to make the audit report public.

Nigerians have through the audit report, known how prudent or public officers at the federal level are.

We are watching to know the action the National Assembly before whom the audit report has been laid. It is high time we told this people that they have taken us for enough ride.

Obiora Victor Ibemesi, Onitsha.
