Politicians in the South-east geo-political
zone have been advised by the National Orientation Agency
(NOA) to imbibe the spirit of tolerance and accommodation
ease the heated political landscape and achieve peaceful
elections next month.
Speaking with newsmen in Enugu yesterday at an interactive
forum, Executive Director of NAO, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe,
said it was through give and take that relative socio-political
stability could be achieved.
He blamed politicians for fanning the embers of discord
which would engender instability thereby making political
contests a do or die affair.
Runsewe said "no system is perfect in the world
and advanced democracies have survived because of political
maturity of their leaders." He pointed out that
even the United States of America experience still shows
tolerance."
He appealed to political contenders in the country
to imbibe the same attitude displayed by politicians
in advanced democracies to ensure the stability and
development of the country.
"I think it will be wise if we all conduct ourselves
in a manner that will not give the visitors a negative
impression of our country. Political actors should realise
that hundreds of international observers are already
in the country to monitor the conduct of the on-coming
elections," he said.
Runsewe said NOA was holding meetings with party leaders
in the country to exchange ideas on how to make the
April elections peaceful.
