Minister for Cooperation and Integration
in Africa, Chief (Dr.) Bimbola Ogunkelu, has revealed
that about 3.47 million Nigerians are infected with
the dreaded disease, HIV/AIDS, with one person getting
infected every minute, while about 1.4 million are dead
so far.
He therefore called for an urgent and appropriate
intervention to combat the pandemic, which continues
to decimate the productive segment of humanity.
Ogunkelu made this remark at the 8th annual lecture
of the Stephen Oluwole Awokoya Fo-undation for Science
Education and award of post-graduate scholarships
held at Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos, during which
some deserving students were awarded scholarships.
He said the theme of the lecture by Prof. 'Ronke
Akinsete, "Breaking the Silence on HIV/AIDS:
The Role of the Community", was very apt, considering
that HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and related infectious
diseases constituted the most challenging pandemic
confronting Africa today.
The Minister emphasised the need to promote the sharing
of information about effective strategies and best
practices. He said education attuned to local, cultural
and social realities is the key to halting the spread
of HIV/AIDS.
"Our communities must wake up to accept responsibility
for acquiring the necessary education and strategies
for the prevention of this scourge.
"We must provide information, care and support
for people living with HIV/AIDS", he said.
