The two day United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP), sponsored Workshop on Corruption and Electoral
Process organised by Shelter Rights Initiative (SRI),
with other non-governmental organisations ended
in Lagos yesterday.
In a communique issued at the end of the workshop,
the group condemned the indefinite suspension of
the local government election, attributing it to
what they called manipulation of the constitution.
Participants called for an increase participation
of women in politics to justify the principles of
democracy. It, however, observed that the women
prefers to work for their men folks during electioneering
campaigns due to what they described as the inaccessibility
of the women while in the office.
It also hailed the 1998 military organised general
elections which ushered in the civilian government
and urged the INEC to do everything possible to
repeat the world acclaimed process.
Mr Ezi Onyekpere expressed satisfaction saying
that the participants are the primary target group
with expected multiply effects that can facilitate
the general elections and described the workshop
as timely.
