Plateau Govt Decries Resurgence of Clashes

From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos

((( BACK

Plateau State Government has decried the resurgence of communal clashes and attacks in some local government areas in the State, saying the development could jeopardise peace, which was gradually returning to the state.

The local government areas involved in the inter/intra-communal clashes include Kanam, Langtang North and Wase.

The Government position was coming on the heels of yet another attack on Tuesday in Kadarko village, Wase LGA where 13 people including a mobile police man were killed.

State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Innocent Ilozuoke, confirmed the lost one of his men in the attack but said he was yet to be properly briefed on the actual number of casualties and the situation on ground.

Just two Saturdays ago, 30 people were allegedly killed in another clash in Kagyal village in Kanam LGA of the state.

The state government deplored the unfortunate attacks, saying it had confirmed that the clashes resulted from theft and counter-theft of livestock.

In a statement signed by the secretary to the state government, Mr. Ezekiel Gomos, the government noted, "although the cases are isolated, the state government is deeply concerned because this development is threatening to disrupt hard earned peace..."

"It is regrettable that despite the relentless efforts of the state government and security services to restore final peace in the affected areas, some unscrupulous people from within and outside these communities have refused to accept the message of peace and instead continued to fan the embers of hatred," it said.

While restating government's commitment to the peaceful resolution of these crises, Gomos said government would pursue peaceful avenues for dialogue and reconciliation.

The state government warned ward, and village heads as well as traditional rulers to dissuade their people from participating in violent crises as from now, traditional rules whose subjects are found fanning the embers of disunity would be sanctioned.

Meanwhile, governor Joshua Dariye has summoned a meeting of the presidential committee on peace and reconciliation for the Southern senatorial district to urgently address the problem.
