In an apparent move to reassure Nigeria's
2010 world cup bid partners Togo, Ghana and Benin of their
place in the alliance, the chairman of the bid committee,
Chief Segun Odegbami has declared that none of them would
be left out.
Odegbami who was fielding questions yesterday in Lagos
on FIFA president Sepp Blatter's comment on the country's
World Cup, told Brila Sports Radio that the bid process
is on track.
He wondered why Blatter should refer to Nigeria's bid as
joint bid when in actual sense, it was Nigeria's bid and
no other country.
"We cannot be talking about co-hosting the world cup
when we have not submitted the actual bid document to FIFA"
Odegbami insisted that countries that are in alliance with
Nigeria for the bid are not co-hosting with the country,
but many of the strategies to actualize an Africa bid which
would benefit countries in the west coast.
He stressed that Nigeria cannot drop any of its neighbours
in alliance because FIFA president made a statement, adding
that "no one man is capable of deciding which wins
the bid except the 24 FIFA executive members"
He stressed that Nigeria is still tinkering on ways to
digest the FIFA world cup bid requirement that was sent
to the committee and would soon come out with ideas on how
to accommodate other countries in the west coast for a real
African bid.
"We want to be fully integrated with our brothers
in the West Coast and this what we want to use the World
cup to achieve" Odegbami said.
The bid committee boss who described Blatter's statement
as misleading advised all Nigerians to support the bid as
no other other country would do that for them.
He added that the foreign media that celebrated Blatter's
statement has nothing at stake as the country's image abroad
has suffered in the light damaging information propagated
by the foreign media to suit their purpose.
